Cruising Reunions
Cruising Reunions by Dr. Earl R. Smith II Over the last couple of decades, as Executive Director of Nautical Options, I have arranged a wide variety of events on cruise ships. Many participants have experienced the wonders of cruising for the first time when we organized their friends and family reunion at sea. Often it had been held at a resort or some family members house. We helped them take it to sea . In almost every case the reunion, once taken to sea, remains at sea year after year. There are a whole raft of reasons why this seems to be the case. Here are just a few: 1. Ease of organization: Reunions typically depend upon one or two individuals who bear the burden of organizing and coordinating the schedules of widely dispersed family members. Even if the reunion is held at a resort, the coordination of air and ground transportation can be daunting at particular times of the year. Then there is the issue of arranging menus, meeting rooms and having the resort accommodate the scheduling needs of the group. Cruse based events are comparatively simple to organize ” particularly if you employ one of the companies like Nautical Options which specializes in them 2. Cost: Two things quickly become apparent after you have decided to take a family reunion to sea. The first is how much less expensive the event is. If you go through an organization which specializes in such events and can access the best rates, the cost of a cruise based reunion will be somewhere between 60 and 70% of the cost of the same event on land. The second thing you will notice is that a cruise based event is, by and large, a one line cost. By that I mean a single payment buys the cabin, all you can eat and unlimited, high quality food (watch out for the midnight chocolate buffet!) and all the distractions and entertainment that one could wish for. For the most part individual travelers will end up paying for their drinks, shore excursions, gambling losses and purchases in the many ports of call. 3. Onboard Entertainment: Cruise ships provide a wide range of on board activities. Every evening there is a Broadway-class show in the main lounge. In addition there are always musicians in the various smaller venues. Each day all sorts of organized activities are on offer. These range from dance classes and wine tastings to trivia games, art auctions, bingo, lectures on the next port of call and a myriad of others. In short, there is never a shortage of things for members of your group to do while onboard. 4. Meeting Rooms: This is where a company which specializes in organizing crews based events can really shine. At Nautical Options we handle all the arrangements for the meeting rooms as well as the arrangements for catering, entertainment and special events. We have managed birthday parties complete with cakes, karaoke competitions, special lectures and a whole range of other activities. 5. Ports of call: A cruise ship is a resort hotel that changes location every night. Each morning you wake up in a different place than where you went to sleep. Some mornings you wake up to a day at sea and the wonderful experience of enjoying the ship. On others you wake up in a new port of call and to all the amazing options that are available. Cruise lines organize a wide range of shore excursions in every port. All of the vendors are carefully screened and the shore excursions are carefully reviewed. In other words, you don t have to worry the cruise line has already done the worrying for you. In each port your group will disperse ” some on shore excursions, some just heading for the beach and others looking for bargains that are always available in the shops. Dinner becomes a wonderful sharing of experiences and a chance to wear that new shirt or goofy hat that you just could not pass up. 6. Having fun and building memories: Memories that live on and on: over the years I ve noticed one thing above all else. There s something about the experience of having a reunion on a cruise ship that keeps the memories alive year after year. I have had clients tell me that five or six years into a series of reunion cruises they still reminisce about the first ones. Other groups post their pictures on the internet and share them with friends and family. Cruising is an amazing experience by itself ” but, with your friends and family members, a reunion makes memories that endure. The Real Cruise Ship Employment Guide
Securing a job, while avoiding the advertising hype

Picture yourself plying over thousands of miles of ocean, while occasionally docking at historic ports of call. Not only are you traveling free, you’re getting paid for it, too.

The average cruise ship salary range is between $3,000 to $5,000 per month with zero living expenses and full insurance. The core sacrifice is being away from family for 4 to 6 months at a time. The core benefits are traveling the world, making great money, and meeting great people from around the world.

Most cruise ships built today resemble small cities. The average crew includes: personal trainers, chefs, wait persons, security guards, housekeepers, bartenders, blackjack dealers, and even golf pros. You can find hundreds of other jobs available on each ship.

With an average contract of about six months, and with high turnover rates, it’s obvious why companies need to fill so many positions.

However, for most people, finding one of these dream jobs can be as unpredictable as the treacherous waves in the high seas. Should you mail your application? How about faxing or e-mailing it? Would a direct call to a cruise line company help?

The mountainous information that is available on the Internet can make your job search even more confusing. Much of the information is vague, while other information is misleading, or is a straight up scam.

The Truth

What about web sites that claim to mail, fax and e-mail your application in for you? What are the real chances of getting hired that way? Common sense should tell you, that if someone is sending your application in with 100 others, you’re probably not going to get a job.

With a jovial chuckle, Damien Caldera, a former Carnival Cruises staff member states: “I don’t know a single hiring manager who employs anyone from any of those faxed or resume e-mail services in the marketplace. It’s just not done. Moreover, it’s a routine to delete and trash this volume of unsolicited applications!"

Richard Marshal, HR Fleet Operations, Management Recruitment, Royal Caribbean International, completely agrees with Damien’s declaration here.

The truth is that cruise ships never advertise 90% of their entry-level jobs. Instead, those jobs are handled by companies like eCruiseShipJobs.com. Yet, the cruise ship lines own Human Resources Department handles most management level jobs.

ECruiseShipJobs global hiring network is an independent confederation of cruise industry hiring managers with key relationships and hiring access with every major cruise line.

Further Investigation

On further investigation of the countries that supply most of ship crew members, I discovered that all of those countries use crewing agencies. In other words, prospective applicants need to apply through those agencies (who collect fees), and then they are usually employed within months, or within a year. Each agency has direct contact with H.R. personnel from various cruise ships.

Relationships are the easiest way to land a job on a cruise ship. Like the old cliché, “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” The cruise industry is rife with this conduct, mainly, because it’s a hospitality driven industry, and the staff are conditioned to behave this way all the time.

Top 5 ways to get hired on a cruise ship!

  1. A referral from a hiring decision maker who works in the Human Resources Dept of a major cruise line. What better way to get a job than to have reference.
  2. Get a referral from a friend who has influence within the cruise line industry. This friend who has contact with those higher up in management, might have enough influence to help you get in.
  3. A referral from a current employee of a major cruise line. It sometimes helps knowing anyone who already is aboard a ship. They can sometimes give you helpful information about the people you need to contact.
  4. Replying to an ad placed by the cruise lines Management Human Resources Dept for a senior or non entry-level job! Sometimes, it’s possible to look in the local newspaper and see jobs offered directly from the cruise lines. These are usually found in newspapers in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles, and any other major cities where cruise ships embark.
  5. A top alternative way to land an entry-level job on a major cruise line is with the eCruiseShipJobs.com global network. They service the world. They have a 13 year hiring success record, and that record of achievement continues today. They have the contacts and the proper guidance to land you a cruise ship job.

The truth is, there are up to 30,000 jobs available each year aboard cruise ships. Plus, that number increases every year. Unfortunately, if you don’t follow the correct procedures, you could find yourself on dry land.

A New Queen Rules the Seas - Queen Victoria Sets Sail December 2007
by Roy Witman © 2006, All Rights Reserved

For the first time in its history, Cunard Cruise Line will have three stately ladies ruling the seas. The trio includes Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth 2 and - as of December 2007 - Queen Victoria. Though many aspects of Queen Victoria will ring true with Cunard cruise enthusiasts, she quickly shows she has her own personality and her own agenda.

What passengers will relish most is Queen Victoria’s dedication to the Cunard standard of luxurious White Star Service at every turn. This dedication by every crewmember ensures each guest is utterly pampered with his/her every request being met.

Grandeur and Elegance Reign Supreme

Following in her sisters’ footsteps, Queen Victoria has been elegantly adorned with an exceptional d cor reminiscent of the most elegant ships ever to sail. A common element found throughout the ship is the use of interesting and sometimes dramatic staircases.

The English Library spans two decks and houses over 6,000 books. The central point is a delightfully wonderful spiral staircase leading from 2 Deck to 3 Deck. Two full-time librarians are available to assist with finding the perfect novel to whisk you away to worlds unknown.

The three-tiered Grand Lobby offers finishes of mahogany and marble along with intricate metalwork and ornamental glass. However, what is truly grand about this lobby is the sweeping staircase laced with wrought iron and a marble stringer. Unmistakably sophisticated, this centerpiece is offset by a chandelier and other details one would expect on a ship of this caliber.

The Britannia Restaurant, the main dining room, set in the stern of the vessel, offers yet another classic architectural highlight with its expansive staircase framed by decorative pillars, archways, and bronze and glasswork accents. Described by Cunard as a “contemporary interpretation of a dramatic and elegant restaurant from the golden age of liners,” Britannia will offer exceptional cuisine intended to impress travelers from all across the globe.

New Innovations Enhance Tradition

Those familiar with Cunard will recognize the comfortably sized interior and ocean view staterooms. Expertly designed to offer the most space, all cabins offer bathrobe and slippers, hairdryer, safe, refrigerator, satellite TV, 24-hour room service and nightly turndown service complete with pillow chocolates.

For those seeking a more elaborate cruise vacation, Queen Victoria will not disappoint. Staterooms are available in Princess Grill and Queen’s Grill suites with up to 2,131 square feet. Amenities include private courtyards, dedicated wait staff, marble bath with whirlpool and impressive ocean views via your private balcony.

Delightful surprises aboard Queen Victoria include al fresco dining in the Courtyard Terrace, private box seats on the upper level of the Royal Court Theater and a grand conservatory complete with retractable glass roof and luxurious rattan furniture.

Queen Victoria also offers the latest technology via an Internet Caf and the ConneXions Conference Center, which will accommodate enrichment programs as well as business events.

Sailing the World

Queen Victoria will enter service December 2007 with two maiden voyages: one 10-day voyage on December 11 to Northern Europe and one 16-day cruise on December 21 to the Canary Islands and Morocco. Unlike her sister ships, Queen Victoria will offer primarily longer itineraries of 21 days or longer.

Sailing the world, Queen Victoria can transport guests to such exotic locales as Singapore, Sydney, the Caribbean and the Mexican Riviera. For those who truly want it all, Queen Victoria offers 106-day world cruises as well.

Steeped in a heritage of classic elegance, Queen Victoria is a legacy offering incomparable service combined with unique onboard experiences and exceptional ports of call. For avid cruisers, she will provide any opportunity for adventure and romance like no other.

Cruise Ship Dining Explained
There are many cruise ships now that have Freestyle Dining (Norwegian Cruises) or Choice Dining (Prince Cruise line) available. Or on Disney Cruise Lines they have what is called Rotational Dining . They have you and your table mates rotate through the three restaurants each evening. CRUISE TIPS: There is usually open seating for breakfast and lunch in the main dining room. Be adventurous with the menu because if you don t like something you can send it back for a replacement. And if they have two things on the menu that you like ask for both of them. My husband, John, always orders the Filet Mignon and the Lobster Tail when they are served on the same night. Many times he tells the waiter to bring what the waiter recommends for that evening. This means you don t have to choose first or second seating. (First seating is 6:00 to 6:30 and Second seating is usually 8:00-8:30). There can be more than one restaurant where you just walk in when you are ready to dine. Every ship will ask for your dining preference when you book your cruise. You can indicate first, second or flexible dining, whichever will make you more comfortable. The newer ships have a 24 hour dining spot which is always casual so if you don t want to do the formal nights you don t have to, although I find dressing up to be quite fun. You will have many options for each meal. You may have any meal delivered to your room, taken in the buffet restaurant or in the dining room. There is usually outdoor dining around the pool with hot dogs and hamburgers, pizza, salads, even Tacos. There are also alternative dining rooms available on some ships that require an additional fee but the service and food are generally 4 to 5 star and worth it if you want to splurge. In my experience families with young children and people who go to bed early usually dine in first seating. But if you don t want to be on a schedule or want to meet new people every night, go for the alternative dining option. Of course you can always ask for a table for two, but be aware that there are only a few of them. If you make a special request one night, John always asks for blue cheese, your waiter will bring it every night. They pride themselves on remembering your tastes. (This only happens when you choose traditional dining). On one cruise we asked for Melba toast, and you bet, every night we had Melba toast. There is one thing I always make clear to the waiter. I am not a big eater but I like to taste everything. I tell this to them the first night so they don t think I am unhappy with the food. It is their job to keep you happy and they take it very seriously. If you don t want to eat in the main dining room almost all ships have a Lido caf © where it is casual but you order from a menu and are served by a waiter. It s one of the many choices if you don t want to participate in a formal night or if you just want to eat by yourselves. On Carnivals single cruises they encourage this style of dining so the singles can meet more people. There are exceptions to this but not many. On some of the newer ships the Lido is open 24 hours a day. On most of the cruise lines they offer the food of the region that you are visiting. While on Hawaiian cruises expect to be served Hawaiian food. When on an Alaskan cruise you will be given the choices of salmon and Alaskan king crab legs. It makes more fun to dine on the local cuisine. All of the cruise lines offer healthy alternative menus or what they call spa menus. So if you want low-fat, low-salt, low cholesterol, vegetarian or any other type of diet, they are available. It is best however to inform your travel agent of any special needs so they can notify the cruise line ahead of time. If you have special dietary needs make sure the cruise lines knows before hand. For example, Royal Caribbean cruises cater to food allergy, Kosher, Indian, Vegetarian and Gluten Free Diets. To be really safe read all of the cruise reviews and cruise critics sites for each ships food and service ratings. Happy Cruising, enjoy it, we do! Copyright © Mary Hanna, All Rights Reserved. Group Cruises — The Superior Alternative to Resorts
by Roy Witman © 2007, All Rights Reserved

Planning a corporate event, family reunion, wedding, or any group activity is a challenge. You can spend countless hours contacting lots of different vendors to book rooms, schedule, entertainment or plan activities: or you can make one phone call. With one point-of-contact you can create a custom event that includes deluxe accommodations, extensive dining options, travel to exciting locations, and more, in one complete package. What’s this refreshing change from the usual resort event? Group cruises!

Group Cruises Are Convenient and Customizable

All big events require coordination and advance planning in order to be successful. If you’ve ever organized a family reunion or a corporate conference you know the effort it takes. Whether you’re commemorating a special occasion or recognizing the efforts of your valued employees, you want your affair to stand out from all the others. Travel is a desirable and glamorous way to delight family members, motivate key employees, or impress your clients. With group cruises you’ll give them diverse and spectacular surroundings in your chosen travel locations. Instead of just one city, as with a typical resort event, your group will travel to multiple exciting destinations like Alaska, Mexico, Bermuda, Europe, the Caribbean, and more, without having to pack and unpack along the way.

Many cruise lines give you direct access to your own event planner, to help design a program that meets your needs and expectations. If you’d rather do it yourself, you’ll find convenient online services, such as those offered by Carnival. You can create and send invitations, poll your guests for desired travel destinations, and choose the cruise that’s right for you. As an incentive to book group cruises, cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean and Carnival may offer air supplements and flight transfers.

Conducting Business During Group Cruises

Group cruises can be as full of activities or as free and easy as you desire. For meetings, seminars or workshops, cruise ships offer conference rooms with extensive audio-visual and computer equipment at no extra charge. Need to host an awards dinner? Private dinning options are available. Family talent shows, employee recognition banquets, networking cocktail parties and more can be arranged with the help of your travel agent and the cruise line of your choice.

In addition, you’ll find unique extras. For example, Royal Caribbean offers team-building exercises such as Team Trivia or Scavenger Hunts, to forge stronger business relationships in a relaxed setting. Family group activities are also available.

All Work and No Play:

But group cruises aren’t all work. There’s plenty of play, too! When you’re ready to relax, entertainment abounds on cruise ships with full production shows, live bands, and theatres. Whether they enjoy casinos and nightlife, spas and relaxation, pools and on-shore excursions, or want to experience everything, it’s all available. Many cruise lines offer programs designed especially for teens and younger passengers, and attractions created exclusively for their ships. Royal Caribbean’s rock-climbing wall is always popular as is its exclusive ice-skating rink and FlowRider .

It’s not only easy to plan, but one price covers it all with group cruises. Everyone will enjoy luxurious rooms, dining, recreation, and the unique experience of taking it all with you while you explore thrilling destinations.

Make It Personal

Group cruises can be personalized with logo items, gift packages, door decorations, and more, The vast array of dining choices aboard cruise ships lets you choose how casual or formal you want to be: an elegant lobster dinner; a buffet with something for everyone; or laid-back informal dining — you can have it all on a cruise ship.

The unique experience of traveling to fascinating ports of call; all the convenience and luxury of sailing on a cruise ship; and the bonus of incentives offered by cruise lines; all make group cruises a cut above the usual meeting facility. If you’re looking for something a little different that will make a big impact, check into group cruises. You’ll be pleasantly surprised with how much you receive for such an affordable rate.

Cunard Cruise Line Appoints New Captains
by Roy Witman © 2007, All Rights Reserved

British-owned Cunard, home to the three most well-known cruise ships in the world, recently announced a changing of the guards, so to speak. Two new captains have been positioned over the Queen Victoria and the entire Cunard fleet. While both gentlemen are native to Cunard, Captain Paul Wright and Captain Bernard Warner have been promoted to new positions.

Captain Paul Wright Will Command Queen Victoria

A 26-year veteran of Cunard, Captain Paul Wright was previously appointed Master of Queen Mary 2 (in 2004) after overseeing her construction. Prior to that, Wright commanded Cunard’s flagship, Queen Elizabeth 2. With his new appointment, Wright will be Master of Queen Victoria, which is due to enter service in December 2007.

When asked about the maiden voyage of Queen Victoria, Captain Wright commented, “I fully expect that sailing Queen Victoria into Southampton for the first time will give me a most memorable event - and I have no doubt it will be equally memorable for those who turn out to greet us; nothing stirs the imagination quite as much as a new Cunarder arriving in port for the first time. She will be a magnificent vessel built in true Cunard style.”

Queen Victoria will truly be a marvel, as she delivers a series of firsts for the Cunard line and cruising in general. For instance, the first private boxes at sea (in the Royal Court Theatre) will be made available on Queen Victoria. Likewise, a floating museum and a two-story library will be introduced. Luxury and elegance have been unleashed in the construction of this ship: That will be made clear to all who sail her.

Captain Bernard Warner Appointed Commodore of the Cunard Fleet

After serving as Master of Queen Mary 2 since 2005, Captain Bernard Warner has been appointed Commodore of the entire Cunard fleet. Sailing since the age of 16 when he entered Warsash School of Navigation at the University of Southampton, Warner began his career piloting cargo ships after joining P&O. His first passenger ship was Oriana, which he commanded in 1969. After sailing numerous ships within the Princess fleet, he realized a lifelong dream upon being appointed as Master of Queen Mary 2.

“I am honoured by this appointment to Commodore of the fleet of the most famous shipping company in the world, and I look forward to re-joining Queen Mary 2 on 20 February in Sydney when both Queens will be together for what promises to be a spectacular occasion,” stated Warner.

Queen Victoria is slated to make a grand entrance, as have her sisters Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth 2. In true Cunard style, Queen Victoria will exude grandeur and grace, magnificence and majesty with rich wood paneling, chandeliers, and marble, metal and ornamental glasswork throughout the public areas. Offering luxury at every turn, Queen Victoria will honor ocean liners of centuries past with her continued focus on excellence. Join Captain Wright as he sets sail in one of three Queens to rule the seas this coming December.

Destination Overview: Cruising Europe and the Baltic Sea
by Roy Witman © 2007, All Rights Reserved

With histories that stretch back as far as time, Europe and the Baltic Sea are two regions that are always exciting to visit. Needless to say, exploring an entire continent would take a great deal of time, so most travelers split their vacations: seeing different sections with each trip. Making choices about which areas to tour first can be a heartbreaking process. After all, they are all so beautiful!

Princess Cruises’ new ship, “Emerald Princess,” is launching with a maiden itinerary to Europe. Along with some traditional favorites, she will also drop anchor at some less crowded ports, which are filled with interest and intrigue. Let’s look at some of the highlights of her European voyages, and perhaps you’ll be better equipped to narrow down your choices.

Unique Destinations in Europe

The Greek Isles

Always popular, the Greek Isles are filled with mystery and fascination. From touring the ancient coliseum and aqueducts to lunching at seaside cafes overlooking magnificent ocean views, the Greek Isles deliver beauty at every turn. With something for all your senses, you’ll taste incredible Mediterranean foods that are truly unlike any others in the world, see brilliant blue water with a stunning backdrop of green mountainsides dotted with classic white buildings. And you’ll delve into the mythical Greek gods and the power they held over this culture.

The Holy Land

Princess hasn’t sailed to the Holy Land in over five years. Adding a variety of tours to the lineup of both “Emerald Princess” and “Royal Princess” bring exciting new options for world travelers. Walk through Jerusalem and Galilee, following in the footsteps of Jesus. Visit the Isle of Patmos where the apostle John was exiled. Tour religiously significant regions of Greece, Italy and Turkey, all UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

According to their website, “The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seeks to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity. The World Heritage List boasts 830 properties including 644 cultural, 162 natural and 24 mixed properties in 138 States Parties.”

The Baltic Sea

Royal splendor awaits for those who choose tours to the Baltic Sea. With storybook grandeur, you’ll visit some of the most sought-after cities in this region. St. Petersburg, Russia, holds the majesty of ornate palaces and cathedrals draped with royal blue and gold. Stockholm, Sweden, comprised of 14 islands, delights the senses with a colorful cityscape surrounded by water in a country that was once ruled by Vikings and Czars.

In addition to these, you’ll also have your choice of other well-loved cities, including Oslo, Norway; Berlin, Germany; Copenhagen, Denmark and more.

When planning your next vacation, consider all that Europe and the Baltic Sea have to offer. Without much effort, you can find countless sites to see while touring these areas of the world. Holding something of interest for everyone in your family, any trip to these historic regions is sure to be the trip of a lifetime.

Cruise Tips To Maximize Your Cruise Vacation
You are getting ready for your much anticipated cruise vacation. The best way to maximize your cruise travel is to have some of these cruise tips about the little things you should know. Many cruisers have questions about phoning home, seasickness, laundry facilities, and photography while on their cruise vacation. These are not big items that should concern you during your cruise travel but helpful hints nonetheless.

Phoning home always gives one peace of mind when they are on vacation. It is natural to want to check on your children, or check into the office, just remember that ship to shore phone costs can be very hefty. They can cost up to $15 minute, so I if you must, keep it brief. You can use your cell phone but be aware that in some areas roaming charges will apply. Your cell phone will not work in Europe unless you have universal service.

It is very important that you leave the information on how to contact you at home in case of an emergency. When you receive your cruise packet there will be contact information included. Make sure you leave the name of the ship, the cruise line you are traveling with, and the itinerary that you plan to follow. Make it very clear that it is for emergencies only.

There is a way to get around this expense and that is to buy a phone card and call home from your ports of call. The connection will be far greater and your savings too. Be aware that this is where the crew members make their calls home so you may want to venture further from the dock to find a not so busy public phone.

All of the modern ships are wired for the internet so you can stay in touch with email. This is a much easier and cheaper way to but your mind at ease. On some ships if you are a frequent cruiser the internet time is free. If you are not, connections can run from fifty cents to a dollar a minute. Just keep in mind that they are not high speed hook ups so they will be slow. Compose offline and then send your message. Some ships will offer you package deals to save a little money. Here again, if you can wait until you get to port, internet cafes ashore are relatively inexpensive.

Seasickness is almost a moot point on today’s cruise ships. They are so large that you don’t even know you are moving unless you look out the window or you are up on deck. With today’s technology for weather tracking the cruise lines know in advance if any storms are approaching and therefore can avoid the area. Earlier cruise ships had stabilizers but nothing compared fo today’s technology which enables them to counter act any motion the sea has to offer.

If that doesn’t calm your fears about seasickness and cruise travel there are a number of ways to ensure a very comfortable cruise. Take a cruise vacation in an area of the world that has calm waters on a modern ship with the aforementioned stabilizers. It is best to book a cabin in the middle of the ship on one of the lower levels. If just looking at a horizon that is moving sends you into a tizzy, book an inside cabin. A little known cruise tip is to arrange your beds in alignment with the ship, bow to stern. Rocking is always easier to handle than a rolling motion. Once, you’ve got yourself situated on board go up on deck and stare at a fixed position on the horizon to get your body use to the motion.

Your doctor may have some medication you can take, or try the acupuncture bracelets that go around your wrists. If you do feel queasy eat crackers and green apples to settle your stomach. Ginger capsules have been said to work wonders and are available in your health food store. By all means avoid any alcoholic beverages which will only make your symptoms worse.

On board laundry services are very expensive. Book a ship that has an onboard laundry room for passengers so you can do your own. These laundry rooms will be equipped with an iron and an ironing board. An alternative is to pack a small bottle of laundry liquid and a few clothes pins in you luggage, hand wash them in your stateroom and hang them from the shower line provided.

Photography is always a big question. Should you bring a camera or rely on the ships photographer? The answer is to bring your own. If you don’t want to worry about your expensive digital camera, buy a lot of the throw away types. Pick up a few waterproof ones too for when you take you snorkel adventure. Take twice as many as you think you need. If you don’t use them on this cruise vacation you can always use them at the next holiday or birthday celebration.

You could also opt to pick up a cheap digital. You can buy them for about $20.00 and you won’t have to worry about losing it since your expensive one is at home. These are usually smaller than the pricey ones so they are easier to carry around.

On formal nights you will want to get your picture taken by the ships photographer. These pictures are wonderful memories of your cruise but they are expensive. The ships photographer will take pictures of you all through the cruise. Getting on and off the ship, on deck, in the dining room at your table and when you enter the dining room on some nights. Although these pictures are fun, you are not obligated to buy them. If you are on a cruise vacation for a special occasion like a honeymoon or an anniversary, splurge and buy them, they will be more than just memories.

These are just a few cruise tips for the little things you should know about cruise travel. Having this knowledge before your cruise vacation will help you on the way to clear sailing.

Happy Cruising!

Vacation Hotspot: The Mexican Riviera
by Roy Witman © 2007, All Rights Reserved

With some of the best-known cities in the world, the Mexican Riviera has long been an attraction for the wealthy and glamorous. It’s wide range of activities offer delightful excursions for every age range and interest. From the world-famous cliff divers of Acapulco to the exceptional snorkeling of Cabo San Lucas, touring the coast of Mexico makes for a vacation you’ll always remember. If you choose one of the premium cruise lines, such as Princess Cruises, you’ll get more for your money and enjoy exceptional service, too.

Glitz and Glamour of Acapulco

If you want to see and be seen, Acapulco is the place! Jet setters, movie stars, the wealthy and more clamor for all that is Acapulco. Local bistros, mariachi bands and premium shopping are just a few of the delights this cosmopolitan town offers. But, without a doubt, one of the best-loved sights is the cliff divers.

Since 1940, men have trained themselves to plunge, unscathed, from rocky cliffs 136 feet high. As if this wasn’t enough, the divers land in just nine feet of water within a narrow channel filled with the churning ocean. One wrong move: one wrong calculation in timing: means certain death. Crowds flock to see this miraculous exhibition from the windows or outside deck of a local restaurant for each of the four daily shows. You won’t want to miss it!

Formerly owned by legend John Wayne, the Los Flamingos Hotel is a destination all to itself. With regular celebrity sightings, many people visit the hotel just to people watch. But if you crave something more than eye candy, try a high-speed jaunt up the Papagayo River onboard a jet boat. The setting for the blockbuster movie Rambo, this river boasts untouched wildlife and rich naturescapes.

Even if you partake in world-class golf, exceptional bird watching, cooking lessons from authentic Mexican chefs and intriguing archeological tours, you’ve only scratched the surface of what Acapulco has to offer!

Puerto Vallarta - From Sleepy To Stunning

Who would have thought the making of a movie could transform a sleepy little fishing village into the vibrant, stunning tourist hotspot? Richard Burton’s Night of the Iguana did just that for Puerto Vallarta. Today, the rich and famous flock to this international resort for great values on leather, jewelry and crafts as much as they do the white-sand beaches.

If you were asked to describe the perfect beach, what would you say? White, powdery sand? Palm trees swaying in a gentle breeze? Crystal-blue waters? You’ve just described Bahia de las Banderas, one of the most famous beaches in Puerto Vallarta. Relax, soak up the sun and the view, as you’re pampered beyond your wildest dreams. Princess and other cruise lines make sure your every wish is met!

When you’re ready for some excitement, book a dolphin adventure! Bottlenose dolphins greet you, as you get wet and wild with these friendly creatures. A local educational center sponsors these events that allow up close and personal encounters.

Jungle tours, mountain treks and other memorable excursions are available to make your stay in Puerto Vallarta everything you want it to be.

Cabo San Lucas - A Water Wonderland

The Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez merge at Cabo San Lucas. With water all around, you’ll have your choice of a long list of quests to choose from. As the ocean pounds the ancient rock formations, you can easily spot sea lions, pelicans and even hear the thunderous sound of whale tails crashing the waves.

Snorkeling, kayaking, fishing and scuba diving are also popular pastimes in this water-encircled Mexican village. If it is related to water, chances are, you can do it in Cabo!

Many top-quality cruise lines, including Princess Cruises, take great strides to provide out-of-the-ordinary experiences for your entire family while onboard or on land. With so much to choose from in the Mexican Riviera, you can opt for practically any length of cruise you wish to as many destinations as you have time for.

Carnival Cruise Line Introduces Fleetwide Upgrades
by Roy Witman © 2006, All Rights Reserved

Carnival Cruise Line has always offered excellent value in cruising, but, these days, passengers will find even more to love. Carnival Cruise Line has recently announced several fleetwide upgrades, including more comfortable beds, shipwide WiFi service, a new loyalty program and more.

Carnival Concierge Club

As a way to reward past cruisers for their loyalty to Carnival, the new Carnival Concierge Club has been unveiled. For passengers who are platinum cardholders and have sailed with Carnival 10 times or more, certain privileges and perks are available, including:

One delivery of petit fours and/or canap ©s to your cabin
Personalized stationery
One specialty Carnival logo item
Guaranteed dining or supper club reservations
Waiving of $20 entry fee to blackjack tournament
Priority reservations and free treatment upgrades at Spa Carnival
Free wash-and-fold laundry service
Preferential embarkation and debarkation
Fully staffed concierge desk, at your service
and more!

Carnival Comfort Bed Sleep System

Developed exclusively for Carnival, this sleep system will all but guarantee you the best night’s sleep you’ve had in a long, long time. With a premium Bonell-spring inner core and high-density foam, these quilted-top mattresses can only be described as plush and luxurious. Add to that a set of high thread count, ring-spun, ultra-soft cotton sheets and fluffy faux down pillows that cradle your neck and head, and you’ll drift away to dreamland in sheer extravagance every night.

Personal Cell Phone Usage

For some people, getting away from it all means turning off the cell phones and every other form of communication to enjoy complete rest and relaxation. For others, not having access to a cell phone just creates more stress in their lives. That’s why Carnival has taken special measures to afford guests the ability to use their own personal cell phones while onboard any Carnival ship. This service is currently installed on the Carnival Triumph and will be retrofitted on the other 21 ships by early next year.

Provided your call plan allows coverage in the areas in which you are cruising, you can place and receive calls using your own mobile phone throughout your cruise.

Wireless Internet Access Fleetwide

Another technological advancement is the “100% bow to stern” installation of wireless Internet access (WiFi) on all Carnival ships. Whether on the deck by the pool, in the casino rolling the dice or relaxing in your suite, you’ll have full wireless Internet access to use with your wireless-enabled laptop. This project is roughly 75% complete. Shipwide WiFi will be fully installed on every Carnival ship by the end of 2006.

Recognizing its guests’ needs and making every attempt to accommodate requests for new features, Carnival is certain these new upgrades will thrill its past and future passengers. The Fun Ships are now also the most comfortable and most technologically advanced ships at sea.
