Cruise Ship Dining Explained
There are many cruise ships now that have Freestyle Dining (Norwegian Cruises) or Choice Dining (Prince Cruise line) available. Or on Disney Cruise Lines they have what is called Rotational Dining . They have you and your table mates rotate through the three restaurants each evening.

CRUISE TIPS: There is usually open seating for breakfast and lunch in the main dining room. Be adventurous with the menu because if you don t like something you can send it back for a replacement. And if they have two things on the menu that you like ask for both of them. My husband, John, always orders the Filet Mignon and the Lobster Tail when they are served on the same night. Many times he tells the waiter to bring what the waiter recommends for that evening.

This means you don t have to choose first or second seating. (First seating is 6:00 to 6:30 and Second seating is usually 8:00-8:30). There can be more than one restaurant where you just walk in when you are ready to dine. Every ship will ask for your dining preference when you book your cruise. You can indicate first, second or flexible dining, whichever will make you more comfortable. The newer ships have a 24 hour dining spot which is always casual so if you don t want to do the formal nights you don t have to, although I find dressing up to be quite fun.

You will have many options for each meal. You may have any meal delivered to your room, taken in the buffet restaurant or in the dining room. There is usually outdoor dining around the pool with hot dogs and hamburgers, pizza, salads, even Tacos.

There are also alternative dining rooms available on some ships that require an additional fee but the service and food are generally 4 to 5 star and worth it if you want to splurge.

In my experience families with young children and people who go to bed early usually dine in first seating. But if you don t want to be on a schedule or want to meet new people every night, go for the alternative dining option. Of course you can always ask for a table for two, but be aware that there are only a few of them.

If you make a special request one night, John always asks for blue cheese, your waiter will bring it every night. They pride themselves on remembering your tastes. (This only happens when you choose traditional dining). On one cruise we asked for Melba toast, and you bet, every night we had Melba toast. There is one thing I always make clear to the waiter. I am not a big eater but I like to taste everything. I tell this to them the first night so they don t think I am unhappy with the food. It is their job to keep you happy and they take it very seriously.

If you don t want to eat in the main dining room almost all ships have a Lido caf © where it is casual but you order from a menu and are served by a waiter. It s one of the many choices if you don t want to participate in a formal night or if you just want to eat by yourselves. On Carnivals single cruises they encourage this style of dining so the singles can meet more people. There are exceptions to this but not many. On some of the newer ships the Lido is open 24 hours a day.

On most of the cruise lines they offer the food of the region that you are visiting. While on Hawaiian cruises expect to be served Hawaiian food. When on an Alaskan cruise you will be given the choices of salmon and Alaskan king crab legs. It makes more fun to dine on the local cuisine.

All of the cruise lines offer healthy alternative menus or what they call spa menus. So if you want low-fat, low-salt, low cholesterol, vegetarian or any other type of diet, they are available. It is best however to inform your travel agent of any special needs so they can notify the cruise line ahead of time. If you have special dietary needs make sure the cruise lines knows before hand. For example, Royal Caribbean cruises cater to food allergy, Kosher, Indian, Vegetarian and Gluten Free Diets.

To be really safe read all of the cruise reviews and cruise critics sites for each ships food and service ratings.

Happy Cruising, enjoy it, we do!

Over 40 New Cruise Ships Planned To Launch By 2010
by Roy Witman © 2007, All Rights Reserved

Cruise enthusiasts have been in a gleeful state over the last year due to the abundance of new ships that have launched. If that’s what makes you happy, you ought to find yourself delirious with joy over the announcements about 40+ new ships to take to the seas during the next three-years.

Practically every major cruise line has plans for a least one new vessel: Many have three or even four slated by 2010. And, just as the number of new ships is growing, so is the trend toward building bigger and more luxurious vessels.

Carnival

Although the smallest ships of the lot, Carnival has the most projects in the works over the next three-years. Ranging in size from 110,000 tons to 130,000 tons, Carnival’s highlight will be “Freedom,” a new class of ship costing about $400 million and carrying 2,974 passengers. With itineraries that include the Western and Eastern Caribbean, European tours to Rome and transatlantic crossings, “Freedom” will give cruise enthusiasts something to look forward to.

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL)

Announcing its new Freestyle Cruising campaign in 2006 was just another step in a long process of completely revamping the entire NCL fleet from the inside out. Since its buyout in 2000, NCL has made great strides in listening to the cruising population then delivering what they want. With innovations including rock-climbing walls, Garden Villas and bowling alleys, you would think NCL had run out of ideas. It seems not! “Pearl” is slated to launch in October 2007 and has gotten rave reviews thus far. The crowning glory of the NCL fleet, however, will be three ships in an entirely new class deemed “F3.”

Weighing in at 150,000 tons and carrying 5,400 passengers, these “F3″ class ships have been described by NCL as, “a further evolution of NCL’s progressive dismantling of the structure, regimentation, and constraints of the traditional cruise experience.” One of the most impressive features is that 100% of outside cabins will have balconies.

Royal Caribbean

Three projects are also on the docket for Royal Caribbean between 2007 and 2010. “Liberty of the Seas” and “Freedom” (yes, Carnival and Royal Caribbean will have ships with the same name) and “Independence of the Seas” all shine far above the rest of the fleet with a tonnage of 160,000 each. Costing in excess of $700 million each, they will accommodate 3,600 passengers respectively. While they will be exceptional vessels offering inventive features, there is one ship that will outdo them. In fact, Royal Caribbean’s grandest vessel yet will outdo every other ship built to date.

Creating an entirely new class of ship, Royal Caribbean has drafted “Genesis.” This will be, to date, the largest ship ever built by any cruise line. It will even surpass the size of “The Queen Mary,” which holds the current record at 151,400 tons.

Accommodating up to 6,400 passengers, “Genesis” will weigh about 220,000 gross tons and cost an estimated $1 billion. Royal Caribbean chairman and CEO Richard Fain brags, “Project Genesis truly is a remarkable ship. Its bold design, daring innovations and technological advancements will delight our existing cruisers and help us draw in new ones.”

Others are also jumping in on the new ship bandwagon. Keep your eyes peeled for “Emerald” from Princess Cruise Lines, “Queen Victoria” from Cunard, and “Solstice” and “Equinox” from Celebrity.

Cruise options are growing more abundant by the day, which makes this a cruiser’s market. The cruise lines are bound to offer more incentives in order to fill these new, expensive ships. Stay on the alert for what are bound to be incredible bargains to come.

Cruise Tips For Cruise Travel At Your Ports Of Call
Cruise travel is one of the best vacations you can take. During your cruise vacation you will visit several different ports of call. Your cruise ship will dock at exotic islands or new countries almost on a daily basis. Check out the cruise reviews on line for cruise tips before you visit your destinations to find out what fantastic experience each port has to offer.

During your cruise vacation you will visit ports to shop, explore, beach, sightsee or hike. There are a wide variety of activities in each cruise destination. Or you could just depart the ship for a chance to walk around for a change of pace. Although this is a great cruise adventure, you should realize that you will only get a small sample of what each port of call has to offer. And be forewarned, as you step of your majestic cruise ship there will be hordes of natives trying to sell you a trinket or a tour around the city.

If you take the advice above and search the cruise reviews, you should have a pretty good idea what each destination has to offer. Choose the one that has the most encompassing tour of your port. In exotic ports they have full day tours, including lunch, that will take you to the highlights of the place you are visiting. This is an ideal way to sample the city or island getting ideas for what you may want to come back for at a later date. On island tours you may want to take an organized tour in the morning, go back to the ship for lunch, then light out on your own to explore more fully, shop or just go to the beach.

If you are more adventuresome, skip the lunch on board and dine in the city. You get to experience the local cuisine and soak up the native culture. This is your vacation, learn new and different things. If you chose to do this check with the cruise director for the best places to dine and make sure you know the exchange rate. On of the cruise tips is to put your meal on a charge card so you will be charged the exchange rate on the day the bill hits the credit card company.

A cruise tip that is very useful is to use the brochure that the ship gives you for their organized tour and follow it on your own. Only do this if you are comfortable with the country you are visiting. If it is your first time overseas to a port of call, it is best to stick with the organized tour for safety and convenience. Other cruise tips can be found online about some of the wonderful things to see and do in various ports of call. Be conscious of one thing, if you chose to explore on your own, know what time the ship leaves and how long it will take you to get back on board. If you are not on an organized tour it is your responsibility to get back on time or the ship will leave without you. You then have to meet the ship at the next port of call at your own expense.

If you opt for an organized tour sponsored by the cruise ship, it should cost you anywhere from $20.00 to over $200.00 depending on what you choose to do. It could be just a simple bus ride around town for two hours or a two day trip from St. Petersburg, Russia to Moscow. The options are endless.

Most cruise lines will let you book in advance on their websites. This is very convenient and helpful with tours that sell out quickly. For instances, in the Cayman Islands the Stingray City tour is very popular and will sell out. If you book it in advance you guarantee your spot. The more inexpensive tours also tend to sell out because of some cruisers watching their budgets. So, don’t miss out, check out the cruise lines website to see if you can book your ticket in advance.

It is good to know the game plan that the tour offers. Things you should be aware of is how much the guide will be with you and do they speak English clearly. Mostly the cruise lines have very competent tour guides, but better safe than sorry. Will have any time on your like for shopping or stopping in a caf ©? It is very important to find out how much physical activity is required before you sign on for any tour. If you have limited mobility you don’t want to go on a tour that climbs the Acropolis in Athens or Dunns River Falls in Jamaica. Find out if a snack or lunch is provided, so if it isn’t you can bring along adequate funds to get your own.

There are private touring companies that you can contact on your own if you wish to tour in a more private fashion. Another alternative is to buddy up with some fellow cruisers and share taxi tours to cut your expense in half. Many times you will meet people on a cruise that have similar interests and you will spend a lot of time together on the cruise ship, why not touring also? It’s a way to save money and enjoy other passengers company.

Only hire licensed taxi drivers. Their credentials should be prominently displayed in the front of the cab. With a licensed driver you are ensured a safe trip and a guide who is knowledgeable about the islands or cities background, where to shop, eat or gamble. And of course they will know the best beaches available. Negotiate the price of your tour up front. If you chose to go to a destination where you will be dropped off for a couple of hours, negotiate with the driver to come back and pick you up. Settle on a price and pay half up front and half on the way back. If the driver has been helpful and friendly, please tip him or her.

Some cruisers like to rent cars in their ports of call. It is recommended that you only do this in destinations that you are familiar with and have a good knowledge of where you are going. Be careful when renting a car. Be sure to check out the entire car for any damages that may already be there and note them on your rental contract. If you fail to do this you may be charged for damage that was already done.

Lastly, use common sense when touring. Don’t travel in dark tight alleys, put your money under your clothes, don’t wear expensive jewelry and don’t let yourself be surrounded, especially by children. Always carry identification and the name of the cruise lines agents in the port of call in case you get in trouble.

You are on a cruise vacation make the best of it. Get off the ship at all of your ports of call whether you are touring or are just poking around. Be sure to take lots of pictures so you will have years of beautiful cruise travel memories.

Happy Cruising!

If you are considering a Hawaii cruise package, there are many ways to go about finding your best deal. By knowing what to look for and what your needs are, you will have a more enjoyable vacation. Here are some things you will want to know first.

Transatlantic Cruising - A Regal Route from England to the U.S.
by Roy Witman © 2006, All Rights Reserved

There is something that every person should experience at least once in his/her life a transatlantic cruise. While the experience in and of itself is amazing, the grandeur is increased all the more when you choose a vessel suited for majesty, such as the Queen Mary 2.

In the tradition of the great ocean liners of the past, you’ll find yourself surrounded by splendor at every turn aboard a vessel that can only be described as “royalty afloat.” As feelings of relaxation and complete security wrap around you, you’ll begin to explore the Queen Mary 2 (QM2) and discover all there is to do during your six-night voyage.

Enrich Yourself

Onboard, you’ll find the world-famous Canyon Ranch SpaClub and a state-of-the-art gym. In addition, QM2 also offers delightful programs designed to help you enrich yourself by expanding your horizons.

Learn the art of acting under the instruction of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. Discover the worlds of space and the sea through seminars held onboard at the first planetarium at sea and lecture halls. From culinary classes to book signings to workshops and seminars on a wide range of topics, every passenger will find a world of interesting and imaginative activities to participate in.

Indulge in All the QM2 Has to Offer

Exceptional cuisine awaits while dining onboard with 10 restaurants serving a wide variety of food from classic to exotic. The main dining room plays host to some amazing meals created by world-famous, award-winning-chef Todd English. From casual buffets to full-service Asian, Italian or American restaurants, you’ll find dining to be one of the many pleasures the QM2 has to offer.

Your stateroom boasts amenities not normally found aboard other vessels. Over 75% of the ship s cabins offer balconies, decks and/or ocean views, meaning you can enjoy even more of the transatlantic experience. From affordable interior cabins to expansive “Queen” suites with abundant luxury, you can select the stateroom that offers the amenities you most desire.

As your body and mind begin to unwind and settle, you’ll relish in the feelings of pampering and utter safety knowing you and your family are secure onboard an ocean-faring vessel.

A Unique Experience for Children

Children will enjoy cruising onboard the QM2, too. With two children’s centers - the Play Zone and The Zone - kids from ages 1 to 12 will find age-appropriate activities and games. Supervised entertainment is available, including board games, computers, a splash pool and other interesting and enlightening activities. Authentic English nannies are also provided to care for the toddlers.

Transporting People and Packages

Not only an elegant way to traverse the Atlantic Ocean, but a transatlantic cruise is also practical as well as relaxing. With no weight limits on baggage or other goods (such as the ones airlines impose), passengers can easily transport thousands of pounds in the storage areas of the ship.

Works of art, souvenirs, antiques, furniture, personal belongings and more can be stowed onboard at no additional charge. This feature makes transporting such items much more affordable and aids with ensuring the safe arrival of your valued belongings.

Four-legged Friends Are Welcome

The QM2 also accommodates pets. Unlike with airline travel, your pets will be housed in approved kennels operated in conjunction with Pet Travel Scheme to ensure they are comfortable and well cared for. Of course, during the voyage, you are welcome to visit with and walk your pet daily. How comforting it will be for them to see a familiar face regularly during their cruise.

What a delightful, safe and entertaining way to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Why book airfare between the U.K. and the U.S., when you can travel in regal style?

by Roy Witman © 2007, All Rights Reserved

Planning a corporate event, family reunion, wedding, or any group activity is a challenge. You can spend countless hours contacting lots of different vendors to book rooms, schedule, entertainment or plan activities: or you can make one phone call. With one point-of-contact you can create a custom event that includes deluxe accommodations, extensive dining options, travel to exciting locations, and more, in one complete package. What’s this refreshing change from the usual resort event? Group cruises!

Group Cruises Are Convenient and Customizable

All big events require coordination and advance planning in order to be successful. If you’ve ever organized a family reunion or a corporate conference you know the effort it takes. Travel is a desirable and glamorous way to delight family members, motivate key employees, or impress your clients. With group cruises you’ll give them diverse and spectacular surroundings in your chosen travel locations. Instead of just one city, as with a typical resort event, your group will travel to multiple exciting destinations like Alaska, Mexico, Bermuda, Europe, the Caribbean, and more, without having to pack and unpack along the way.

Many cruise lines give you direct access to your own event planner, to help design a program that meets your needs and expectations. If you’d rather do it yourself, you’ll find convenient online services, such as those offered by Carnival. You can create and send invitations, poll your guests for desired travel destinations, and choose the cruise that’s right for you. As an incentive to book group cruises, cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean and Carnival may offer air supplements and flight transfers.

Conducting Business During Group Cruises

Group cruises can be as full of activities or as free and easy as you desire. For meetings, seminars or workshops, cruise ships offer conference rooms with extensive audio-visual and computer equipment at no extra charge. Need to host an awards dinner? Private dinning options are available. Family talent shows, employee recognition banquets, networking cocktail parties and more can be arranged with the help of your travel agent and the cruise line of your choice.

In addition, you’ll find unique extras. For example, Royal Caribbean offers team-building exercises such as Team Trivia or Scavenger Hunts, to forge stronger business relationships in a relaxed setting. Family group activities are also available.

All Work and No Play:

But group cruises aren’t all work. There’s plenty of play, too! When you’re ready to relax, entertainment abounds on cruise ships with full production shows, live bands, and theatres. Whether they enjoy casinos and nightlife, spas and relaxation, pools and on-shore excursions, or want to experience everything, it’s all available. Many cruise lines offer programs designed especially for teens and younger passengers, and attractions created exclusively for their ships. Royal Caribbean’s rock-climbing wall is always popular as is its exclusive ice-skating rink and FlowRider .

It’s not only easy to plan, but one price covers it all with group cruises. Everyone will enjoy luxurious rooms, dining, recreation, and the unique experience of taking it all with you while you explore thrilling destinations.

What attire should you pack for your voyage on the Royal Caribbean Cruise
If you are planning to take a luxury Royal Caribbean Cruise, probabilities are you are all set for the grand getaway, right? At any rate, you may find yourself in a dilemma on what to wear on Royal Caribbean Cruises while in the middle of rummaging through your closet. So before you commence packing, take time to look over this article to assist you to determine on what to bring along with you for your trip. Since the trip can undoubtedly cost you a significant amount of money, you would want to enjoy it as much as you can and escape the hassle of distressing about having nothing suitable to wear on certain occasions on the vessel. So what are the other guidelines to keep in mind when pondering on what to wear on Royal Caribbean Cruises? Your clothing will mainly revolve around two categories - casual and formal attires, depending on the activities that you are planning to engage in. Casual Attire For the warmer day weather you will be opting to be in cooler attire. On land excursions, shorts or jeans with light colored t-shirts, polo shirts or short sleeved shirts would be ideal. If you were planning to walk longer distance, I would propose trainers or comfortable walking shoes. If you want to spend some time in the water I would suggest that you should also make sure to bring along several swim wears so you will not encounter the problem of stepping again into a wet suit. Don t bother on bringing a towel since fresh ones will be constantly provided in the cruise. If you do not want to skip your weekly fitness schedule, you may want to pop by the ship s gym so dress appropriately. It is requested that passengers would not wear shorts in public areas after six pm. So for evening casual wear - men its slacks and an appropriate short sleeved shirt or polo shirt. For ladies’ will be appropriate pants, skirts and cool dresses would be ideal. Shoes for ladies should be low heeled to avoid difficulty in maneuvering atop the deck. And don t forget bring along your favorite sun block lotion, so that you can work on getting a beautiful tan without suffering any sunburns. Formal Attire If you are taking a seven-day cruise or more, it would be advisable to bring along a formal suit or dress. If you are wondering on what to wear on Royal Caribbean Cruises during evenings or if you are planning to dine on one of their elegant restaurants, it would be best to have some classic clothing that will readily fit in the formal gathering. The most commonplace outfit for men is sport coats and neckties, and it is of great help to know that the wearing of denims in restaurants is usually discouraged. You may consider renting your formal evening wear, so please call up the cruise company in advance to find out if they cater for this. It may be a little costly but it saves you the hassle of packing your formal wear or if you do have one. As you may have gathered, the Royal Caribbean Cruises can tend to be quite dressier than any other cruises, so it would be best to be forewarned than to suffer in anxiety of feeling under dressed and noticeably out of place. Even minor matters such as the dress codes can potentially ruin your holiday. Most of your attire will revolve around what you will be doing about in the cruise so it s wise to do some homework of your own. You can mainly get much information from the cruise pamphlets, reading travel magazines or by calling the cruise office. Better still, if you have some close friends or family member who have gone on a luxury cruise, don t hesitate to consult with them on what to wear on Royal Caribbean Cruises. It is vital to have the right attire to fully delight in all the activities and amenities on the vessel and also to sidestep the chance of being forced to buy some dresses on the vessel. This will just cost you to make some unneeded expenses.

Adventure Cruising - The Cruise Holiday Of A Lifetime With P&O Cruises
Cruising needn’t be a sedate way of seeing the world - an adventure cruise could take you anywhere from the Amazon to the Antarctic. If you are one of those people who still think a holiday at sea is just a pastime for the over-the-hillers with plenty of money, then think again.

A Cruise Vacation That Can Include Airline Reservations
An air-sea cruise is when your cruise vacation has been booked with airline reservations to get you to the ship s port and back home again. The cruise line buys its tickets in bulk from the airlines. They find out where you are coming from for your cruise travel and book you passage from a nearby airport to one close to the cruise ship’s home port. Each cruise line has its own policy on how they deal with the sale of airline tickets, so here are some cruise tips in that area.

What is the cost of the tickets if I book them with my cruise?
The amount will be quoted when you book and will be shown on your bill.

If I need to cancel, are the refund policies different for the plane tickets than for the cruise?
No, as long as you cancel before the penalty phase begins.

Is there a service fee charged to have the Cruise Line issue my Airline reservations?
Only if you use their air deviations plan. The fee is around $50.00 each.

Do I have any choice in which Airline is used?
Yes, if you use there air deviation plan.

Can I get credit for my frequent flyer mileage if the cruise lines books my airline reservations?
No. You can use your frequent flyers if you book on your own.

Can I fly nonstop or have any control over the route that is taken, or do I just get what ever they find?
Here again, use the air deviation plan.

How do I get from the Airport to the ship s pier?
If you have booked an air/sea cruise vacation the cruise lines will supply you with a voucher for a shuttle bus. If you booked your own airline reservations it will be up to you to get to the port.

Is there a shuttle service available from the airport where you ll be arriving? Is there a charge for this service or is it included? Is the service included if you don t book your flight through the Cruise Line?
If you book your flights through the cruise lines, there will be a shuttle and you
use your transfer.

How and when do I meet up with Cruise Line personnel?
They will be standing in the baggage claim area and will hold a sign with the name of the ship. They will direct you to the shuttle.

How is my luggage handled, do I have to pick it up at the airport or is it automatically sent to the ship?
You will have to pick it up at the airport and then the shuttle will take it to the ship with you.

What accommodations, if any, are made if the Airline they use causes me to miss the ship?
If you have booked with the cruise lines they will accommodate you by getting a hotel room for the night and a flight to the next port.

There are many advantages to booking an air-sea package for your cruise travel. The cruise line takes care of the airline reservation. Since cruise lines buy in bulk and usually provide a discount package rate, the ticket price is generally lower than what can be found in the general market. The transfer of luggage is easier, and a free shuttle will take you from the airport to the docks for your cruise vacation.

The cruise line will have your flight information and will be able to track your flight in case of a delay. Others on the cruise might be on the same flight and they might just hold the ship waiting for you to board. The biggest advantage is that if anything goes wrong to delay you, the cruise line will generally become more involved in getting you to the ship.

There, of course, are disadvantages as well to booking an air-sea package. You might be able to find a better deal on your own, or you may have to fly an airline you don t like. You will not get credit for frequent flyer miles by going through the cruise line, and you might not be able to fly non-stop. Finally, you might end up flying a longer route than you d pick for yourself.

You could book your own airline tickets, but only do so if you can get a better deal. The strongest consideration should be how confident you are in being able to make it to the ship for your cruise vacation on your own. If you are already flying in a few days early, know you ll be there on time and you can save over the air-sea on plane tickets and shuttle costs, then you might just consider going it alone. But, remember you are going it alone. In many cruise reviews it is recommended that you book your airline reservation with the cruise line.

The cruise lines will be more likely to make accommodations and work with the airline if their booking didn t get you to the ship on time. They will be better able to track your late flight and might even delay the ship if they know you ll only be slightly late. There have been many cruise vacations that have delayed the departure from port especially if there is a large group of cruise travelers on a late plane.

Depending on the circumstances, they might even rebate some of your cruise or give you a discount toward your next cruise vacation with them. However, the airlines are independent contractors. Most cruise conditions of carriage state that since the airlines are independent contractors the cruise line makes no warranty and assumes no responsibility for any failure or delay in their contractor s services. This is another reason to purchase a strong trip insurance package.

When you book your own airline tickets for your cruise vacation, if the route you picked to make it to the ship fails, you are on your own. Don t risk missing your cruise travel over a few frequent flyer miles. No matter how you get to your cruise vacation, try to avoid this situation by booking a flight that leaves you plenty of time to get you to and from the pier to the airport. It is recommended that your go on the internet and read the many cruise reviews on this subject.
